With a behind-the-scenes look at various stages of its production process, Diamond Mowers is showing how seemingly small decisions help build attachments designed to keep crews working in the toughest conditions.
“Every downstream process depends on the accuracy of the previous step and forms the foundation for how we approach precision and performance throughout our manufacturing operations,” said John Mayer, vice president of operations at Diamond.
From engineering and material selection to fabrication, testing, and final inspection, each decision is made with one goal in mind – to deliver equipment that performs reliably no matter the application or environment.
Why Precision Matters at Every Stage
Heavy equipment manufacturing may appear straightforward: cut steel, weld components together, and apply paint. In practice, however, each stage builds upon the next and requires coordination among engineering, production, quality, and finishing teams to ensure attachments can withstand routine vibration, abrasion, and continuous use.
What separates Diamond, according to Mayer, is the combination of disciplined manufacturing processes and real-world application knowledge. Rather than treating fabrication, welding, machining, coating, and assembly as isolated operations, every stage is designed to support the long-term durability and dependability of the finished attachment.
Details Customers Never See
Long before steel reaches the production floor, engineers make decisions that influence how equipment performs years later.
While operators often evaluate equipment based on productivity and reliability, much of that capability is rooted in design elements they may never notice.
“There are small structural design details everywhere in our machines that improve longevity and uptime,” added Nate Cleveringa, vice president of engineering and product management at Diamond. “They are what makes the difference between equipment that simply works and equipment that performs day after day under demanding conditions.”
One example is the strengthening ribs incorporated into primary boom structures. While they may appear insignificant, they provide substantial reinforcement and help attachments endure years of demanding service. Similar engineering features that quietly improve durability, reduce stress, and support long-term performance can be found throughout all of Diamond’s equipment.
A development process that combines digital analysis with physical validation supports every detail. Diamond engineers begin by modeling and refining designs through CAD, or computer-aided design, before moving into prototype construction and testing.
“Our process is to design in CAD with our baseline knowledge, analyze and iterate the design digitally, and then actually put steel together,” said Cleveringa. “Once it is assembled, we instrument the structure and go try to break it.”
This process allows engineers to evaluate how equipment behaves under stress and refine potential weaknesses before it reaches customers.
Material selection is equally critical. Mulching, brush cutting, and roadside maintenance each place different demands on equipment. Matching steel grades and wear materials to those conditions helps balance strength, toughness, weight, and more.
From Validation to In-the-field Readiness
Every design decision must ultimately prove itself through verification, inspection, and testing before equipment reaches the field.
According to Mayer, many people are surprised by the amount of verification that takes place throughout production. “Quality is not something inspected only at the end,” he explained. “It is built into every stage of process.”
Throughout fabrication, welding, assembly, and finishing, Diamond’s teams confirm dimensions, inspect weld quality, and evaluate overall build integrity. Before equipment leaves the facility, it undergoes additional inspections and operational evaluations that verify structural integrity, hydraulic performance, and overall readiness for the work ahead.
Validation extends beyond the production floor to hands-on application and testing where it matters most: in the field. Diamond collects feedback directly from customers throughout product development. In fact, early versions of new equipment often spend months in front of customers before full-scale production begins.
“The earlier that collaboration is done,” Cleveringa explained, “the smoother things will go in production and ultimately when in use by our customers.”

While technology and manufacturing processes continue to evolve, Diamond believes its greatest strength remains its people.
Across the organization, employees bring decades of hands-on problem-solving experience and a deep understanding of how equipment performs in the field. Few embody that commitment better than Regional Sales Manager Paul Schreurs and Parts Sales Lead Jimmy Parsons, both of whom have spent more than 25 years helping build the company alongside founder Bill Doyle.
When asked what customers should know about the people who build their equipment, Schreurs offered a simple answer:
