CMC expands Utah aggregates production with new CDE 400 tph wash plant

Privately-owned contractor and materials producer CMC Rock, based in Provo, Utah, has strengthened its position in the Greater Salt Lake aggregates market with the installation of a new modular wash plant designed and engineered by washing experts CDE.

The 400 tons per hour (tph) plant, located at the company’s West Mountain production facility, is producing a range of in-spec sand and aggregates from a challenging, fines-heavy deposit, helping CMC respond to growing regional demand for washed construction materials.

CMC Rock was founded in 2006 following the acquisition of Z Rock and Tru Crushing, two Utah-based companies that had been producing aggregates and providing portable crushing services across the western United States since the early 1970s. Today, the company manages over 3,500 acres of aggregate properties. In addition to its aggregate operations, CMC Rock also operates three concrete batch plants to meet the growing demand for high-quality concrete products across the region.

As a family-run business led by owner and president Todd Cusick, CMC Rock has extensive experience operating wash plants from a range of US-based suppliers. For its new West Mountain operation, however, the company selected CDE’s M4500, which was delivered in partnership with Goodfellow Corporation, to meet its urgent need for fast delivery, reliable performance and the ability to process difficult feed material.

Sam Cusick, operations manager at CMC Rock, said: “With demand for washed concrete aggregates continuing to grow across the Greater Salt Lake area, we needed a wash plant that could help us bring high-quality material to market both quickly and reliably.”

The solution was developed following detailed analysis of CMC’s feed material, which showed high fines content and required a more sophisticated washing process. CDE’s M4500 E5 was configured with a dual pass EvoWashTM system, flat-bottom cyclones and flexible sand blending capability to maintain C33 concrete sand specification while maximizing product yield. In addition, an AquaCycleTM A900 water management system provides an efficient alternative to water extraction from natural sources by recycling up to 90% of the process water for immediate recirculation and reuse by the system.

Although the material proved more difficult to process than initial testing suggested, with fines content reaching around 15% at times, the plant has maintained the required production rate and product quality.

The project is expected to bring approximately 800,000 additional tonnes of concrete aggregates to the Greater Salt Lake area each year, supporting CMC’s strategic expansion and helping address a supply gap in the local market.

Sam added: “The CDE solution has delivered exactly what we need. Even with feed material that has proved to be more challenging that initially expected, the plant has maintained the tonnages and specifications we need, and the process working with CDE and Goodfellow has been one of the smoothest we’ve ever experienced.”

Within just a few months of the plant going live, CMC Rock secured profitable contract agreements for the entirety of its projected material production until the end of 2026.

CDE business development manager Gustavo Brasil said: “This project is a prime example of how CDE’s washing solutions can be engineered to meet increasingly challenging site conditions and difficult materials without having compromising on the quality of the end product or throughput.”

The installation has also demonstrated the value of the CDE and Goodfellow partnership.

Goodfellow’s Utah branch provides day-to-day support from within close proximity of the site, while its inventory of CDE parts helps minimize downtime. CDE’s CustomCare and technical teams have supported CMC in adapting the plant and operational practices to maintain output and specification as material conditions changed.

Tom Childs at Goodfellow commented: “Working closely with the team at CDE, we were able to rapidly deploy a modular solution that is now helping CMC Rock unlock significant new production capacity. Having an M4500 available for fast delivery meant the company could be very responsive to immediate market demand and the availability of our parts inventory is continuing to ensure that demand it being met day in, day out.”
